I don’t typically write reviews, but as a mother of two teenaged daughters, I feel compelled to in this case. Please do not buy this book for your child, especially without reading it first. I was taken in by the positive reviews and literary award symbol on the cover. The book purports to be a self-help guide, and yet there is little to no actual guidance or help involved. The big take away? “Think positively†and your problems will eventually be solved. As adults, we have life experiences and the ability to read things critically. Teenagers, on the other hand, especially those who are on the younger or less mature side, may be more impressionable and unable to fill in the HUGE gaps this book leaves the reader with. I’m not exaggerating when I say that More than half of the book covers “case studies†of teens who have struggled with a variety of emotional and social issues. The author is supposedly using this technique to demonstrate how teens can also overcome their own personal obstacles. However, not one of the case studies actually provides techniques, excercises or tangible strategies the reader can incorporate into their daily lives. In fact, the whole book lacks substance. A huge disappointment.
This is a great book for teens to understand all the internal tics that can happen to derail you from your goals. Jacqui has written a friendly book targeted at teens, that aims to teach teenagers about their emotions as a coach and mentor. This book is different from others in that her tone does not aim to lecture at you; instead, she kindly and gently teaches you. I highly recommend this book for teens and adults to understand their emotions.
Unless you are a parent who loves your child, or unless you are a teen who wants the truth about how to create your place in the world. The book launches with a question that I suspect most teens are sick and tired of hearing "Why Can't You Just Control Yourself?" The answer to that question, and the reason that parents and other adults ask similar questions of teens is because they...do not yet understand how to control themselves. Parents, you cannot teach what you do not know, and if you were raised with criticism, judgment, mistrust, and were made to feel worthless, chances are this is the recipe from which you will raise your child. Unless of course...you read this book. While many authors and counseling professionals try to "fix" parent-teen relationships with suggestions like - give each other space, respect each others feelings, and improve your listening skills - Jacqui takes a different approach and supplies both sides with the playbook. This is how your mind works. This is where your current beliefs came from, and since your beliefs drive your behaviors you must change the beliefs before you can change your behaviors. This is how you change your beliefs. In step-by-step fashion, and using real world case studies the Author carefully explains how the process of the mind works, and reveals how to use this process to become the type of parent who will never again ask their teen, or to be come the teen that will never again have to hear: "Why Can't You Just Control Yourself?"
I wasn't sure about the book because of the title, but I'm really glad I bought it. I have purchased many books for my teen daughter last year and she read a chapter or two and then got bored. This book kept her interest. She read the whole book in a couple of hours and then proceeded to quiz me to see if I understood how my mind works. A few examples she gave me piqued my interested so I ended up reading the book too. Even though this book was written for teen girls, it applies to everyone. It is so powerful to know how the mind works and how to control it!
Wonderfully written with clear explanation and direct examples to help guide your understanding of your conscience and subconscience thought process. Though this book is geared towards teens and young women, I feel that anyone and everyone would benefit from applying these techniques to their everyday lives. Self-love, forgiveness and self-awareness are all highly desirable qualities we should all strive to attain. The author gives you the tools and understanding to do just that. Wonderful book! Highly recommended!
When I read "The Unconscious mind always wins", I solidified my connection to this book and the author. She is credible and authoritative, and she truly understands that success comes from within as she has personally helped thousands of teens. My connection with the book started a couple pages in, because it relates to the book I wrote titled #ThePowerfulDay.I wrote #ThePowerfulDay to share a method for living a healthy way of life on a daily basis. This book, I would but my damn mind won't let me goes deeper into the conscious and unconscious mind and really helps people understand how to use their mind in a technical yet simple way.The book is filled with plenty of examples that can literally be applied to the readers lives as they are reading. The book also contains clients stories and notes that are relatable. For instance, Like Hailey I get super anxious, except my anxiety stems from war.Another client Steve connected to me, because I also got in an accident. I didn't have a problem driving afterward, instead my problem was drinking. I vowed to stop drinking, because I have a message to share with other veterans with a TBI and PTSD.To sober up I joined AA and enrolled into an intensive outpatient recovery program. I was told to live one day at a time, but there was no clear way to live one day at a time in a healthy way. This led me on a journey to discover what that meant to me, and now I am living #ThePowerfulDay because my mind will now let me. Our "unconscious mind always wins" but when our conscious and unconscious mind work together we create a win-win situation.
Easy Reading and to understand. I tried a few of the suggestions presented and was surprised that they worked. For myself as well as for my students. Simple easy to read and to understand. Useful for parents, therapist and spouses. I tried the suggestions presented and achieved the desired results.
